Module 8 Virtual Learning Environments

Part A: LMS Set-up

For this module, I have created a learning management system (LMS) through the website edmodo. Here is the link to sign in for edmodo, and the group code for the classroom group that I created is:  ryej3x. Here is the Group Public URL link, and the join URL link is: edmo.do/j/isi3zx. Learning management systems set up in a virtual environment are an exciting new prospect. They allow for teachers to post homework, notes, quizzes, resources, and many other things in order to enhance student learning. This unique way of interacting with students is an excellent way to keep students involved and interacting both in class and outside of class.

Part B LMS Reflection

Learning Management Systems Reflection:

For my learning management system (LMS) I created an edmodo group for a grade twelve physics class. Edmodo provides several tools to use, such as assignments, quizzes, polls, alerts, and messages. I used all of these tools in my group, but I will explain two of the ones that I think would be most useful.

Quiz Tool: I used the quiz tool to create a short, interesting quiz for low marks. This quiz reviews some of the course material, and also has some interesting extra material to help keep students interested in the course and in the field of physics. This way students can review course material while keeping interested in the subject, and encourage them to ask questions in class or by email about concepts or questions they didn’t understand.

Assignment tool: The assignment tool can be used to create and send out assignments to the students in the group. In addition to just sending our information on the assignment, this tool allows you to post extra resources, links, and notes which will be very useful in aiding students in their homework. By implementing this students will be able to review resources and information directly pertinent to the course which I have selectively picked out for them. This way they by doing their homework assignments they will be able to access resources to aid them in reviewing or learning about upcoming concepts and ideas for later classes.

Flashcards App: A flashcards app is available on edmodo which enables students, or me as the teacher to create flashcards with concepts or course material, or search for previously made flashcards with material pertinent to the course. Students can create their own, or use flashcards created by me or other teachers. This will help the students review concepts and have a better understanding of terms and concepts in class, and for when they are doing assignments or tests.

Here is a resource that I found helpful for understanding learning management systems: What is LMS?
